Govtweets Tracks Election Dialogue

With the presidential election just a few months away, there is definitely no lack of political coverage on the news or in the blogosphere. However, this is the first year that Twitter has had a chance to be a major player during a presidential election and it has already shown itself to be versatile in the political dialogue arena.

In a previous post we made note of C-SPAN’s effort to track election dialogue over Twitter and then this past weekend we saw TechCrunch profiling govtweets.

Govtweets was created by Stephen Taylor, a blogger and political analyst. The site provides a real-time snapshot of the conversation taking place on Twitter. It does so by displaying all tweets that include the last names of the political candidates (McCain, Palin, Obama and Biden) into a single stream. The project reminds me of twistori in terms of implementation, but provides additional features to allow visitors to pause the stream and display an image of the political candidate and twitterer.

This is another great example of slicing up the Twitter stream to drive into a focused topic. Though I wouldn’t recommend govtweets as the best tool for researching the presidential candidates prior to the election, projects like these do provide a non-stop flow of interesting content and could make for another fun screensaver (someone get working on that).
