Every once in a while we’ll see an event so large that it consumes all channels of the media. The true test of a topic’s hotness is if it trends on Twitter Search. Today we saw one of those times when news was heard of Steve Jobs’ decision to step away from Apple to take time to address some health issues.
The last time something of this magnitude was seen was back in November during the presidential election. Today was significant enough to snatch up 6 of the 10 trending slots at its highest point. Here’s how it looked around 4:30 today:
Sure, there was a few other items on there, but 60% of the trends were directly related to his Steveness (Steve Jobs, Apple, CEO, AAPL, Tim Cook, and Breaking). So not only were people talking about Jobs, but they were also talking about Apple’s stock (AAPL) as well as Jobs’s replacement, Tim Cook.
So what’s this prove? Nothing that we didn’t already know – which is that Twitter users are among the most “in the know” when it comes to current events. It’s just impressive to see this sweep the Twittersphere as quickly and broadly as it did.

I first started taking notice of Twitter during the Mumbai terrorist attacks ... it was extraordinary to see how far ahead of the curve the twitter community was compared with the MSM.
