Power Twitter Brings the Web Interface Up to Speed

The tagline of Power Twitter is “taking Twitter up a notch”. It certainly does that, since there are a ton of UI and functionality improvements that we’d like to see Twitter implement (more on that later). It installs as an addon for Firefox and activates itself whenever you’re visiting Twitter’s website.

Power Twitter adds features like Twitter Search, status histories when hovering, a Facebook status stream, inline embedded media, and URL expansion to Twitter’s web interface. If there’s a link to a YouTube video, Flickr photo, or Google Map, Power Twitter will automatically embed that media inline with the rest of the content on that page. It will also expand shortened URLs and display the returned page’s title, which isn’t quite so helpful as if it left the short URL and allowed you to expand it on command (like Twitter Search does).

A few of the more intruiging things it does for you is adds a Twitter Search box underneath your information so you can quickly perform a search. Instead of pushing you to a results page, it’ll list the results just like it was a real pane built-in by Twitter themselves. You can even scroll through multiple pages of results. If it could save searches, it would be a masterpiece. It also allows you to view the latest status updates from your Facebook friends if you’re logged into Facebook on that computer.

Power Twitter

If you’re unfortunate enough to be relegated to using the web interface but are lucky enough to be using Firefox, give this a shot. There are a bunch of other interfaces that give you a more compelling Twitter experience than the de facto standard, and this is definitely one of them. If you try it out, make sure to let us know what you like or don’t like.

@Andy It's never too late to get into the market. I still haven't found the one Twitter desktop client that does everything I want it to do. In fact, it seems these web-based clients have been killing the desktop apps in terms of overall functionality.

Anyways, if you decide to build something, just keep us in the loop so we can be the first to check it out. ;)
