GM’s OnStar says Twitter Integration Coming Soon

OnStar

Even with the financial turmoil looming over General Motors, that doesn’t keep them from coming up with new ways to please their customers. In a report from Gear Live, author Andru Edwards says Twitter is about to become part of the OnStar experience.

OnStar Corporation is a subsidiary of GM that provides subscription-based communications, in-vehicle security, turn-by-turn navigation and remote diagnostics systems in a variety of General Motors vehicles. Edwards caught wind of the announcement in a recent customer survey administered by OnStar.

“While in your vehicle, you can use OnStar to submit and retrieve tweets (messages) via your Twitter account. Using OnStar’s Voice-Activated Hands-Free Calling system, and having your voice converted into text, you can provide updates which would appear in the “What are you doing?” section of your Twitter homepage. It is also possible to listen to a tweet that was sent to you by someone else after it has been converted into voice. You can send and receive tweets without having to type or read anything.”

Voice-to-text transfer capabilities have existed for Twitter with the help of applications like TwitterFone, but this would be the first instance we’ve heard of where the voice commands would be integrated into a vehicle.

To the general public this probably seems worthless, especially when remembering the updates from the “Twouble with Twitter” video (Just found a parking spot, ordering a pizza, walking my dog), but if you think about it a bit harder, there are certainly some neat applications for the tool.
Andru Edwards makes this suggestion for OnStar Twitter use:

andru_edwardsYou [could] voice-tweet something like “I’m headed to downtown Seattle, where can I find the best slice of pizza?” You [could] then listen for responses, and when you hear one, have OnStar direct you to that location.

Apparently there has been no official word as to when this feature would be available via OnStar, but you can count on it garnering some major buzz in the news when they do. Also, this may be a sign that Twitter is truly making headway into becoming a mainstream communication tool.
