Smishing (SMS-based phishing)

Smishing, also known as SMS-based phishing, refers to a cyber attack technique where fraudsters manipulate and deceive individuals through text messages on their mobile devices. Similar to phishing, smishing aims to trick users into revealing personal information, such as passwords, credit card numbers, or social security numbers, by posing as a legitimate and trustworthy entity.

These text messages often create a sense of urgency or fear to prompt immediate action from the recipient, such as clicking on a malicious link or calling a fraudulent phone number. The links typically redirect victims to fraudulent websites or request sensitive information directly through the text message. Smishing attacks take advantage of the widespread use of smartphones and the appeal of instant communication to deceive unsuspecting individuals into disclosing their confidential information, leading to identity theft, financial loss, or other harmful consequences. Vigilance, skepticism, and refraining from clicking on suspicious links or sharing personal information through SMS are essential to prevent falling victim to smishing attacks.
