Data Protection Act 2018

The Data Protection Act 2018 is a comprehensive law that regulates the processing of personal data in the United Kingdom. It was enacted to strengthen data protection and provide individuals with more control over their personal information. The Act replaces the previous Data Protection Act 1998 and incorporates the requirements of the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Under the Data Protection Act 2018, organizations that process personal data are required to adhere to certain principles, such as the lawful and fair processing of data, ensuring data accuracy, and storing data securely. It also grants individuals specific rights, including the right to access their personal data, the right to have their data erased, and the right to object to the processing of their data. The Act imposes strict obligations on organizations to notify data breaches and introduces significant penalties for non-compliance, including fines of up to £17.5 million or 4% of global annual turnover, whichever is higher. Overall, the Data Protection Act 2018 aims to ensure that personal data is processed responsibly and individuals’ privacy rights are protected in an increasingly data-driven world.
