Only one month ago a movement started on Twitter. Fully organized by volunteers and solely on the web, Twitter users from around the world will be holding Twestivals tomorrow (02/12/09) to raise money and awareness for charity: water.
charity: water is a non-profit organization that works to supply safe and clean drinking water to people in developing nations. Nearly one in six of people on the planet don’t have access to safe and clean drinking water. This lacking of such a critical resource is the cause of 80% of all sickness and disease and kills more people every year than all forms of violence, including war.
Over simplifying the magnitude of this event, Twestival is a tweetup for something bigger than networking and promoting our own work. Twitter users are meeting in real life and through this cause coming together as larger communities to support those in need.
Through this effort, Twestival is estimated to raise over $1 million that will go to support the 1.1 billion people in the world who cannot access clean drinking water today.
If you haven’t done so already, it is not too late to join a Twestival or donate. For more information visit the Twestival website at http://twestival.com. On the site are links to donate to the cause and a list of all the cities and organizers hosting a Twestival.
