See-Through Register

A see-through register is a design printed in two incomplete halves — part on the front of a page, part on the back — positioned so precisely that holding the page up to a light makes the two halves combine into one complete image. Viewed from either side alone, each half looks like an unremarkable fragment.

Why registration is the difficulty

The design itself is trivial to reproduce. Anyone can print half a coat of arms on one side of a page and the other half on the reverse.

Getting them to line up is the problem. The two halves have to align to within a fraction of a millimeter, and doing that requires a press that prints both sides in a single pass with the sheet held in exact register throughout. Print one side, flip the sheet, and print the other, and the alignment error introduced by re-feeding is visible immediately when the page is held to the light.

So the feature does not test whether someone can draw an emblem. It tests whether they had access to a perfecting press with security-grade registration control, which is expensive industrial equipment rather than something available in a print shop.

A counterfeit typically shows the halves offset by a millimeter or two, or shows one half slightly rotated. Both are obvious against the light and neither is fixable without the right press.

Why see-through registers matter for identity verification

This is a transmitted-light feature, which puts it in a different category from most of the others in this cluster.

Intaglio, guilloche, microprinting, and rainbow printing are all assessed in reflected light — light bouncing off the surface. A see-through register requires light passing through the substrate, alongside watermarks and embedded security threads.

That distinction matters operationally. A verification flow that only ever sees reflected-light images cannot assess this class of feature at all. Capturing it remotely means asking the holder to hold the page against a light source, which is a meaningfully different instruction from “photograph your passport” and is not always practical.

Where it is captured, the check is precise and easy to automate: the composite image either aligns or it does not, and misalignment is measurable rather than a matter of judgment. That makes it a useful complement to the reflected-light features a identity document verification system normally relies on.

What a see-through register can’t do

It needs transmitted light. No backlight, no check. This rules it out of most standard remote capture flows, which photograph the document lying on a surface.

It only works on paper. The feature depends on a translucent substrate, so it appears on passport pages but not on polycarbonate cards or data pages.

Tolerances are not absolute. Genuine documents show small registration variation from production. Deciding how much misalignment is too much requires a reference for that issuer.

It attests to the substrate, not the data. A page with perfect registration can carry altered printed information. It proves the page was made on the right equipment, nothing more.
