Passport Data Page

The passport data page is the page carrying the holder’s biographic details, portrait, and machine-readable zone. Also called the biodata page or simply the datapage, it is the only page a verification system normally needs — and, for exactly that reason, the page attackers concentrate on.

How the page is organized

Doc 9303 divides the page into two functional areas that behave very differently.

The visual inspection zone is everything a human reads: the portrait, the field labels, the printed values, the issuing authority. Layout here varies enormously between countries, because the standard fixes what must be present rather than where it must sit.

The machine-readable zone is the opposite. Two lines of 44 characters at the bottom, in fixed positions, set in OCR-B, identical in structure on every compliant passport on earth.

That split is deliberate. One zone is optimized for people and national design identity; the other is optimized for machines and international interoperability. Both encode the same core facts, which is what makes them checkable against each other.

Why the data page matters for identity verification

Nearly every automated passport check happens entirely on this page. The portrait is the biometric reference. The MRZ is the structured data. The chip, where present, is usually embedded here. Everything else in the booklet — visas, stamps, endorsements — is irrelevant to establishing who the holder is.

The concentration cuts both ways. Because all the value sits on one page, all the attacks do too. Photo substitution, alteration of the date of birth, and complete counterfeit data pages inserted into genuine booklets are the three dominant fraud patterns, and each targets this page specifically.

The defense is that the page carries three independent representations of the same facts: printed text, MRZ characters, and chip data. A forger has to alter all three consistently. Altering one is easy; altering all three is materially harder, and comparing them is a core function of identity document verification.

The migration to polycarbonate is the single biggest change in passport security in two decades, and it exists almost entirely to defeat photo substitution.

What the data page can’t tell you

A genuine page can carry false data. If the issuance process was corrupted, every check passes and the underlying identity is still fabricated. Document verification cannot see behind issuance.

Design variation limits visual rules. With nearly two hundred issuing authorities and multiple design generations each in circulation, no fixed checklist of visual features covers the space.

It does not identify the holder. The portrait is a reference image. Matching a live person to it requires biometric comparison and liveness detection.

Wear degrades verification. A page carried in a back pocket for eight years will fail checks that a fresh forgery passes cleanly — one of several reasons an immaculate document deserves more suspicion, not less.

Where is the chip in a passport?
