Security Thread
A security thread is a narrow strip of material embedded inside a sheet of paper while the paper is being made. It sits within the fiber structure rather than on either surface, and depending on the design it may be fully buried, may surface at intervals in a windowed pattern, and may carry microtext, magnetic properties, or fluorescent pigment.

Why embedding is the whole point
Almost every printed security feature lives on a surface, which means that in principle it can be reproduced onto a surface. A security thread cannot, because it is not on a surface at all.
The thread is introduced while the paper is still a wet mat of fibers, and the sheet forms around it. By the time the paper is finished, the thread is inside the material. Extracting it destroys the sheet; adding one to finished paper is not possible without splitting and relaminating, which is obvious to look at.
Windowed threads make the check easier without weakening it. The thread weaves so that short segments break the surface on one side at regular intervals, appearing as a dashed line you can see and feel in reflected light. Hold the page to a light and those dashes join into one continuous unbroken line — because underneath, the thread never stopped.
That transition from dashed to continuous is a strong signal. A printed imitation of a dashed line stays dashed when backlit, since printing cannot produce material that is present between the dashes.
Why security threads matter for identity verification
Threads are more common on banknotes than identity documents, but they turn up on passport pages and on high-value certificates, and they matter to verification for a structural reason worth naming.
They belong to the same transmitted-light family as watermarks and see-through registers. A capture flow built around photographing a document flat on a table sees none of them. That is not a small gap: it means an entire class of the hardest-to-counterfeit features is invisible to the check.
Knowing which features a given capture method can and cannot reach is part of designing an honest identity document verification flow — and part of not overclaiming what a remote check has actually established.

What a security thread can’t do
It requires transmitted light or UV. Standard remote capture reaches neither, so the feature usually goes unchecked in mobile flows.
Paper only. Like watermarks, threads are a papermaking feature and do not appear on polycarbonate or PVC cards.
It says nothing about printed content. Genuine threaded paper carrying altered data passes every thread check there is.
Stolen stock defeats it. A counterfeit made on genuine security paper has a genuine thread. Every substrate feature carries this same caveat.
