Intaglio Printing
Intaglio is a printing process in which the image is engraved into the plate rather than raised on it. Ink fills the recessed lines, the surface is wiped clean, and the paper is pressed into the engraving under enormous pressure — typically thousands of pounds per square inch. The ink is lifted out of the recesses and sits on top of the paper as a raised, tactile ridge.

Why pressure is the security feature
Almost every other printing method deposits ink onto a surface. Offset, digital, and inkjet all lay a thin film that sits flush with the paper. Intaglio does something physically different: it forces damp paper into engraved channels and pulls thick ink out with it.
The result has height. Run a fingernail across a banknote portrait and you feel ridges — that is intaglio, and it is why the check works even for someone who has never been trained. The tactile signature comes from a physical process that requires a purpose-built press exerting pressure no office equipment approaches.
A counterfeiter with a very good printer can match the color, the artwork, and the position. What comes out is flat. Photocopiers, laser printers, and commercial offset presses all produce a surface with no relief, and the difference is detectable by touch in about a second.
Why intaglio matters for identity verification
For in-person checking, intaglio is one of the highest-value features available, precisely because it does not depend on training or lighting. A person handling a document feels it or does not.
Remote verification has a harder time. Relief does not photograph the way it feels, so a phone camera cannot sense texture directly. What it can capture is the consequence of texture — the way raised ink catches light differently across a surface, and the shadow structure that produces a latent image at an oblique angle. Those secondary effects are what a identity document verification system looks for when it assesses printed security features.
Intaglio is also the carrier for several other features in this cluster. Guilloche patterns and microprinting both depend on the fineness of line that intaglio engraving allows, so it is less a single feature than the foundation several others are built on.

What intaglio can’t do
It wears. Relief flattens with handling. A passport carried for eight years has noticeably less tactile definition than a new one, which makes the feature less reliable exactly where documents are oldest.
It does not survive a photograph. Remote verification cannot feel the document, so intaglio contributes indirectly through light behavior rather than directly through texture.
It says nothing about the data. Genuine intaglio printing on a document whose printed details have been altered still feels correct. Substrate authenticity and data authenticity are separate questions.
Simulation is improving. Embossing and thermographic printing can produce a raised feel that passes a casual touch test. The difference shows in edge sharpness and line structure under magnification, not in the presence of relief alone.
