Microprinting
Microprinting is text printed at a size too small to read with the naked eye — typically appearing as a solid line, a border rule, or a shaded area until you put a loupe on it, at which point it resolves into legible words. It is one of the oldest anti-copying features in security printing and one of the most durable.

Why size is the security property
Microprinting works on a resolution gap. Security presses can lay down type at sizes that consumer scanning and printing equipment cannot resolve, capture, or reproduce.
Photocopy a document with microprinting and the text does not come through as smaller text. It comes through as a smudge, a broken dotted line, or nothing at all — because the copier never captured letterforms in the first place. It sampled a line and reproduced a line.
That produces a clean binary check. Under magnification the original reads as words. The copy reads as noise. There is no partial credit and no ambiguity, which is unusual among security features and part of why microprinting has stayed in use for decades.
It is also cheap to include. Once a document is being printed on a security press capable of intaglio or fine offset, adding microtext to a border costs essentially nothing.
Why microprinting matters for identity verification
The value is that it degrades in a very specific, recognizable way.
Most security features fail gradually under reproduction — colors shift a little, lines thicken slightly. Microprinting fails categorically. Legible or illegible, with almost nothing in between, which makes it a strong signal rather than a judgment call.
For remote verification it depends entirely on capture resolution. A modern phone camera at close range can resolve microtext on many documents, but compression, motion blur, and distance all destroy it quickly. This is one of the features that most rewards a good capture experience, and one reason identity document verification systems push hard on real-time capture feedback rather than accepting whatever image arrives.
It also pairs naturally with guilloche patterns, since microtext is frequently embedded within the line work itself — what appears to be one curve of the lattice turns out to be a line of type.
What microprinting can’t do
Consumer equipment has improved. High-resolution scanners and printers narrow the gap that makes the feature work. It still defeats an office copier; it is less absolute than it was twenty years ago.
Wear destroys it first. Microtext is the earliest casualty of handling. A worn document may fail the check while being entirely genuine, so a failed read is weak evidence on an old document.
You have to know where to look. Placement varies by issuer and design generation. Without a reference for that specific document, you do not know which line to magnify or what it should say.
Content matters as much as presence. A counterfeit may include microtext that is legible but wrong — misspelled, the wrong phrase, or the wrong repeat interval. Presence alone is not the check.
