Ghost Image
A ghost image is the faint, smaller reproduction of the holder’s portrait that appears elsewhere on an identity document, usually beside or behind the primary photograph. It exists for one reason: to make photo substitution require two forgeries instead of one.

The attack it was designed against
Photo substitution is the oldest document fraud there is. Take a genuine document belonging to someone else, replace the photograph with your own, present it. The document is real, the data is real, only the face has changed.
A single portrait makes this tractable. Lift the laminate, swap the image, reseal. Older laminated-paper documents were vulnerable enough that this was a routine attack rather than a sophisticated one.
A ghost image changes the arithmetic. Now two portraits of the same person appear in two different places, produced by two different processes, and they have to match. Replacing one and leaving the other creates an obvious mismatch that a human sees instantly. Replacing both means defeating two separate production techniques on the same document.
On polycarbonate documents it becomes harder still, because the ghost image is typically laser engraved inside the material rather than printed on it. There is no layer to lift.
Why ghost images matter for identity verification
For automated checking, the ghost image is a comparison that costs almost nothing and catches a specific, common attack.
Two portraits of the same person exist on the same page. A verification system can compare them to each other before it ever compares either to a live selfie. Substitution attacks that pass a casual human glance often fail this comparison, because matching a replacement photograph to an existing engraved ghost image is genuinely difficult.
It also functions as an authenticity signal in its own right. The ghost image is a production feature. Its absence, its position, its rendering quality, and how it interacts with surrounding print all indicate whether the document came off a real issuance line. What a ghost image can’t do
It does nothing against a full counterfeit. If the whole document is fabricated, both portraits are the attacker’s own and they match perfectly. Ghost images defend against alteration of genuine documents, not against wholesale forgery.
It does not identify the holder. Both images could be of the same person and that person could still not be the rightful owner — a genuine document belonging to a lookalike passes every internal check. That gap closes with liveness detection and matching against the chip portrait.
Quality varies widely. Some ghost images are crisp and high contrast; others are so faint that automated comparison is unreliable. Issuer and design generation determine what you get.
It is not universal. Common but not mandatory. Absence is not evidence of forgery unless you know that particular document design should have one.
