Why a decorative pattern is a security feature

Guilloche patterns look ornamental. That is somewhat the point — they read as engraving-era decoration — but the security value is entirely in the line geometry.

Guilloche is one of the more useful features in remote verification, because unlike intaglio relief it survives being photographed.

A camera image of a genuine guilloche shows crisp, continuous, separated lines. An image of a reproduced one shows merged strokes, broken curves, or moiré artifacts. It also covers a large surface area. Because guilloche typically fills the background of the entire data page, any localized tampering — a patched date, an altered field — interrupts a pattern that should be continuous. The interruption is often easier to detect than the alteration itself.

Print quality caps its usefulness. The feature depends on line separation surviving to the reader. A worn document, a compressed image, or a low-resolution capture destroys the very detail being assessed.

It is not standardized. Every issuing authority designs its own, so verification requires a reference for that document type. There is no universal guilloche to check against.

Presence is not authenticity. A counterfeit carrying a well-executed guilloche passes a casual look. The check is whether it matches the known pattern for that document, at the expected line weight — a reminder that an impressive-looking feature is not the same as a correct one.
