Planchettes
Planchettes are small discs or flakes — typically colored, fluorescent, or both — introduced randomly into paper during manufacture. Like security fibers, they scatter unpredictably, so no two sheets carry the same arrangement. The difference is shape: fibers are threads, planchettes are discs.

How they are applied, and why it matters
There are two production approaches and they differ in how much protection they give.
Mixed into the pulp, planchettes end up distributed through the thickness of the sheet like fibers. Fully embedded, they cannot be lifted or picked out without damaging the paper.
Scattered onto the wet web instead, they sit closer to one surface. This is cheaper and makes them more visible, but it also makes them more vulnerable — a surface-applied planchette can sometimes be dislodged, and it is easier to imitate with a printed dot at a single depth.
The check that distinguishes genuine from printed is the same one that works for fibers. Real planchettes have thickness. Under magnification and raking light they show a slight edge and cast a small shadow, because they are discrete physical objects sitting in or on the paper. A printed dot has no thickness at all and casts nothing.
Why planchettes matter for identity verification
Planchettes appear more often on certificates and security paper than on passports, so in identity work they show up mainly in supporting documents — birth certificates, proof of address, employment or educational records — rather than on the primary ID itself.
That is worth noting because supporting documents are frequently the weakest link. Verification of a passport may be rigorous while the accompanying certificate gets a glance, and breeder document fraud exploits precisely that asymmetry. Knowing what security paper looks like, and what a printed imitation of it looks like, matters for the documents nobody scrutinizes.
For remote checking, visible planchettes are photographable in ordinary light, which puts them in the same accessible category as visible fibers and outside the transmitted-light group that a identity document verification flow usually cannot reach from a phone.

What planchettes can’t do
Surface-applied ones are the weaker version. More visible, but easier to dislodge and easier to imitate than fully embedded planchettes.
They catch repetition, not single forgeries. The strongest tell is the same arrangement appearing on multiple documents, which requires comparing more than one.
UV types need UV. Unreachable in a standard remote capture.
Genuine paper, false content. Like every substrate feature, planchettes speak to where the paper came from and nothing about what was printed on it — and a counterfeit on stolen genuine stock carries real ones.
